Sensei Martin Ryan IKKI

Sensei Martin Ryan has taken up head instructorship in the Mountbellew dojo in Sensei Jake's absence. Sensei Martin is with the IKKI since 2004. He holds the ranks of Shodan in Karate and Kobudo. He has completed the Introduction To Coaching (ONAKAI/Coaching Ireland) and the child awareness courses. Sensei Martin has since 2004 trained and instructed at the Honbu Dojo and continues to do so on Tuesday nights.


Sensei Jake Mulvany, 3rd Dan Karatedo, 2nd Dan Kobudo is the head instructor at the Mountbellew Dojo. He also instructs at the Hombu (Ballinasloe dojo). Jake began his karate in 1999 in the Hombu under Sensei Leo Mulvany, Chief Instructor, IKKI. Jake ranked to Nidan in Toronto, Canada in April 2009 under Shihan Kei Tsumura. He has competed at National and International level in kumite and kata for the IKKI and ONAKAI (NGB for karate in Ireland) and also at the IKIF world championship in 2005 (Los Angeles) and 2009 (K.L. Malaysia) and 2013 (Osaka, Japan).
Sensei Jake is a Level 1 coach (Coaching Ireland) and holds a Judge B certificate (ONAKAI referees committee) along with first aid and AED. He was, up to recently, the assistant coach for the IKKI National Kumite Squad.

Mountbellew is the youngest club in the Itosu-kai Karatedo Ireland group. It began under Sensei Geraldine Mulkerins in January 2008 who retired from karate in December 2011.
Sensei Jake's work has taken him away from the Mountbellew dojo for a while. Sensei Martin Ryan, 1st Dan Karatedo, 1st Dan Kobudo and Sensei Leo Mulvany, 6th Dan Karatedo, 5th Dan Kobudo (Chief Instructor IKKI) will take classes for the interim.

Jake Mulvany Itosu-Ryu championships 2016 USA


Sensei Jake Mulvany took part in the Itosu-Ryu International in Los Angeles, July 2016. Organised by the US branch of the IKIF World body (IKKI are founding members) there were three traditional styles of karate competing (Itosu-Ryu, Wado-Ryu & Ryuei-Ryu) with each Soke being present, Sakagaami, Otsuka III and Sakumoto respectively. There were also seminars where each Soke presented aspects of their own karate style. The competition was in three parts, specific style kata, open style kata and open kumite (sparring). Sensei Jake took gold in Itosu-Ryu Kate, Silver in Open Style Kata and bronze in Open Kumite. A great performance and great result for the IKKI and the Mountbellew Dojo.

Intervarsities 2016 KarateJake mulvany IKKI

Sensei Jake Mulvany took part in the 2016 Intervarsities Karate Tournament in University College Bellfield in March 2016. He represented Athlone Institute of Technology where he studied for 4 years and graduating with a BSc. in Computer Design and Games Software
Development. Jake performed very well having just returned to competition after his studies and took silver in the mens senior kata competition.

IKKI Hosts Ayumu Oda Sensei

Jake Mulvany Ayumu Oda IKKIThe IKKI hosted Ayumu Oda Sensei in May 2015. Oda Sensei lives in California. He is a long term friend of the IKKI and we have met him many times over the years at international seminars and world karate championship tournaments.

He also competed in individual kumite and team kumite. The Ireland team consisted of 25 competitors and 12 supporters. The Next IKIF World Championships take place in Hong Kong in 2017.

Sensei Jake ranks to 3rd Dan degree Black Belt

Sensei Jake ranked to 3rd Dan in December 2012.
There were ten students in total ranking in the group that day. The ranking panel on the day: Sensei's Leo Mulvany, Tony Dolphin, Claire Harte, Marie Dolphin and John Dolphin.
